  • Data collection arrangements

Data are collected from parents of children with autism spectrum disorder, and with their permission from a professional who knows the child. Following informed consent being signed, parents are sent a questionnaire to complete about the child, asking about core information such as the type of diagnosis, any other disorders, language level, emotional and behavioural problems, type of school attended, any siblings with ASD. The data can also be entered directly online by parents. Data are stored on a secure Newcastle University server.

  • Research programme

The database provides a basic set of data about children with autism spectrum disorder, which can be analysed in itself. However, the data chosen to be collected are primarily to allow appropriate filtering of requests from researchers in the field of autism for support with recruitment to research studies. The Daslne database is closely allied with ASD-UK, the national family research database. Additionally it operates in collaboration with local professionals to maximise coverage, so as to ensure representativeness of the children registered.
