Research summary
People of Black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds are found to be two to three times higher risk of death from COVID-19 compared with the population as a whole. The Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC) found that one third of the deaths in hospitals in England from COVID-19 involved patients who had diabetes. COVID-19 infection enters the pancreas and may cause damage that reduces the insulin production. This may worsen diabetes control and may even induce new onset diabetes. We aim to study the gylcaemic control in our cohort.
We will also study whether there was a worsening of the body mass indices, renal function, blood pressure, lipid profile and proteinuria in our patients. These are all linked to diabetes control.
People with diabetes experience disproportionately high rates of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders. During the COVID Pandemic worsening of these psycho-social aspects may have led to worsening of diabetes control. As a secondary aim, we plan to study these effects using a psychologist developed questionnaire.REC name
