  • Research summary

The study involves new and expectant dads who will develop and shape a programme aiming to support the transition to parenthood from a mental health perspective. It is recognised that further research is needed and that men should be involved in the process to establish their needs in this transition. Exploration of the challenges and benefits of being part of this process will occur as well as gaining understanding of the men's experience of taking part. There will be up to 18 participants over 3 groups who will be new or expectant dads over the age of 18. They will attend 4 sessions over a 4-week period. Sessions will be 2 hours and the first hour will involve discussion of topics that could be included in the programme. There will be a skeleton of possible topics available for use by the facilitator and discussion of what the men feel is important. The second hour will be spent reviewing the content further and group work to gather views, ideas and comments. The 4th session will involve presentation of a suggested programme based on the data from the previous sessions. There will also be a focus-based discussion about the experiences of being part of the research. Notes obtained through this and data collected in the second hour of the sessions will be analysed to identify themes to inform the final programme and to also gain insight in to the lived experience of the participants. The next cohort of participants will build on the work of the cohort before with the aim of building a programme that might be suitable for further research as an intervention. It is hoped that some participants will also join the research team to be part of the analysis and peer review process.
