  • Research summary

This self –funded research is a cross-national study between Wales and Nigeria, on people (the members of the public and mental health professionals) perceptions and thoughts on personality disorders. There are many debates surrounding personality disorder in terms of its diagnosis and treatment. This debates includes whether or not personality disorders are clinically real/true and if they are treatable or not.

This study aim to explore perceptions of personality disorders characteristics, traits and behaviours by both mental health professionals and the public, on how they affect or influence community/acceptance and treatment of individuals with personality disorders and also examines the role societal and cultural differences play in influencing those perceptions and thoughts.

The potential benefits of this study are; firstly, to increase the knowledge and understanding on how perceptions and thoughts may positively or negatively influence behaviours towards individuals with personality disorders. Secondly; how these perceptions and thoughts may influence community acceptance and treatment of people with personality disorders and lastly, to illustrate the role society and culture plays in influencing those perceptions and thoughts.
This study would use the combination of qualitative research and case study strategy to investigate the social phenomena of ‘personality disorder’. The collected interviews will be analysed and interpreted to provide significant information on personality disorder as a case study.
The study participants would be mental health professionals from a federal psychiatry hospital, members of a local church organization, academic staff and students from a university in Bangor, North Wales, United Kingdom and Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The period for data collection would between four to six months and this is a four years PhD study with two years remaining.
