Research summary
Reason for this study: This study is about crisis care for people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). We are doing this study because service users and staff often have poor experiences in crisis care services. We want to improve the experience of service users and staff, and reduce the risk of harm for people using these services.
This study is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Participants will be recruited from Greater Manchester and Derbyshire.
What we will do: This study has two phases. In phase one, we will interview up to sixty people who know about crisis care services for people with a diagnosis of BPD. This will include service users, staff members, and experts like academics and charity workers.
We will ask participants for their ideas about what good crisis care services could look like for people with a diagnosis of BPD. We will also ask for their ideas about the best way to start using these ideas in NHS services. In phase two, we will bring together four groups of up to ten people who know about crisis care for BPD. These groups will include service users, family members, NHS staff and other experts like academics and charity workers. In each group, we will think about the ideas for good crisis care we learned about from phase one of the study. Participants will be asked to rate each idea. This will help us choose the best ideas for good crisis care.
How we will use our findings: We will use the findings from this study to design a new crisis care pathway for people with a diagnosis of BPD. We plan to test this care pathway in later studies, to see if it works.
