Research summary
Interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen a recent rise generally with a subsequent rise in research addressing the potential benefits of AI in various contexts. However, a literature review shows that little to no research exists on the use of AI in support of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) practitioners.
Research that does exist addressing the use of AI in CBT generally is theoretical with nothing that specifically draws upon the experiences and perspectives of practitioners to develop software applications. Improving interventions for psychosis is of particular importance because although one in thirty-five of those accessing mental health services do so for psychosis, it accounts for one in every ten pounds spent by NHS mental health services with CBTp being the preferred intervention.Employing Ethnographic Action Research, this project seeks to create a dummy application prototype and accompanying design guidelines. It is hoped the guidelines will guide the development of future AI-driven software which aims to support the quality and efficacy of CBTp practitioners in their work with clients experiencing first-episode psychosis.
This study has two aims:
1. To create a dummy prototype of an AI-driven software application to support CBTp practitioners in their work.
2. To create guidelines for the future design of AI-driven software applications to support CBTp practitioners.A Working Group of CBTp practitioners will be invited to create a software application dummy prototype. Feedback groups comprising service users, CBTp practitioners, supervisors, & NHS commissioners will be invited to assess the output of the Working Group and give questionnaire feedback that will further shape the guidelines and prototype.
Participant engagement will be carried out online (MS-Teams) and at NHS (Essex Partnership University Trust) or Non-NHS (University of Essex) sites.
