  • Research summary

This observational study will investigate the incidence of ocular symptoms in adult patients testing positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARs-Cov-2). It will also evaluate whether these symptoms are associated with COVID-like symptoms, demographic characteristics of patients and course of illness and any effects on pre-existing eye symptoms. SARS-CoV-2 is a new, contagious, RNA virus causing the infectious Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with a worldwide reach. There several reports of coronavirus affecting the conjunctiva and cornea. Ocular symptoms questionnaires have been used recently to elaborate if any were experienced during COVID in Wuhan province. However these were done on a small scale and may not be generalisable to the UK. Patients testing positive for SARS-Cov-2 from the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust sites will be invited to complete questionnaires on eye symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is proposed to recruit 120 patients. This study has the potential to be useful for the public in raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and it will also help healthcare staff to be alert to potential COVID-19 cases and may also lead to further research and investigation into the long-term implications of COVID-19 on the eye. The study is sponsored by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust
