Research summary
The recent pneumonia outbreak spreading from Wuhan, China, in December 2019 is caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus infection, defined as new coronavirus disease (COVID‐19). CT Chest has historically had a high sensitivity for detecting early lung changes of COVID-19 but access to CT is often limited due to availability. Conversely Lung Ultrasound (LUS) has been shown to be a well tolerated bedside test that can be performed repeatedly with no radiation exposure to the patient. While LUS showed a good correlation with CT findings in COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory failure, its role in monitoring recovery of these individuals is presently unknown. We propose a pilot study to assess the rate of functional recovery in hospitalised patients who had recently contracted COVID-19. We hypothesize that LUS may be a useful tool to detect inflammatory changes in the lung interstitium of these individuals during their recovery phase from this illness.
