Research summary
COVID –19 is the disease caused by a novel human coronavirus that is now named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in Wuhan, China, in late 2019 and is now causing a global pandemic. \nEstablishing information about this novel coronavirus quickly is a key priority as this will influence policy and guide treatment. It is established that this infection is transmitted through respiratory droplet form, and causes a viral pneumonia which may progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome and ultimately be fatal.\nDue to COVID-19, our entire ENT practice and services have changed, we are all providing emergency life saving procedures including looking after COVID-19 positive patients. As part of our clinical work we are regularly performing tracheostomies including on patients with a history of COVID-19 with variable outcomes. The literature and best practice is yet to be established for the airway management of COVID-19 patients. We hope that by studying our patients undergoing tracheosotmy we can identify prognostic factors to enable the identification of patients who are likely to benefit from a tracheostomy and avoid operating on patients who are unlikely to benefit from the procedure.
