Research summary
In response to the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic, NHS hospitals have increased their intensive care unit capacity through a widespread cancellation of elective surgeries. In England, the lack of a national reporting system for surgery and associated complications means the precise number of operations cancelled and the impact this has on patients is unclear. \n\nRestarting elective surgery is now a clear priority, but the resources required in a post-pandemic era are uncertain. Many surgical patients remain at risk of getting COVID-19, with much greater predicted risks of complications than normal. To inform evidence-based public policy, the systematic reporting of national data for surgical care is required.\n\nOur aim is to investigate COVID-19 as a risk factor for complications after surgery; to monitor national surgical activity during the pandemic recovery and future peaks; and to estimate resource requirements for continuing elective surgery. This will be done using routinely collected data from the NHS and Office for National Statistics for all patients undergoing surgery in England before, during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. \n\n
