Research summary
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory tract infection caused by a newly emerged coronavirus (SARSCoV-2). While most people with COVID-19 develop only mild self-limiting illness, approximately 14% develop severe pneumonitis that requires hospitalisation and oxygen support. About 5% require admission to an intensive care unit for ventilatory support. In severe cases, COVID-19 can be complicated by ARDS, septic shock, and multiorgan failure including kidney, liver and cardiac injury. In these severely affected patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation on an ICU, the mortality remains high (up to 50%).
There is an increasing recognition that post-mortem examinations may provide a distinctive (and otherwise inaccessible) perspective on pathogenesis and pathology. This study aims to obtain consent for research use of tissues, biosamples and organs that are obtained at coronial or hospital post-mortem.
