  • Research summary

The blood vessels in the lungs can be blocked by blood clots called pulmonary emboli (PE). These are potentially fatal if not detected and treated.\nThere have been several reports that there is a high incidence of PE in patients diagnosed with pneumonia due to coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). There is also a known increased risk of PE with other types of pneumonia. \nWe aim to conduct a study to compare the incidence of PE in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia against other types of pneumonia. If a higher incidence of PE in COVID-19 pneumonia is proven, this will have a significant implication on the diagnosis and treatment pathways of these patients, which could lead to life-saving management.\nWe will review the demographical, clinical and radiological information of patients with COVID-19 and other types of pneumonia who had a CT pulmonary angiogram (a CT scan that can detect PE). \nThis information will be collected retrospectively using the electronic health records at a large district general hospital in Birmingham.\n\n
