  • Research summary

Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is a worldwide public health emergency that has resulted in a significant number of deaths. Early reports suggested that 10-20% of those infected had elevated levels of troponin, which is a sensitive blood marker for injury or damage to the heart muscle. It has been shown that patients with COVID-19 and a high troponin level are more likely to die but it is unclear why this enzyme is elevated with COVID-19 infection. The plan to investigate patients with acute COVID-19 infection and those that have recovered from COVID-19 infection in order to assess for injury to the heart.\n\nPossible explanations are inflammation in the heart or development of small clots within the heart arteries. The aim of this study is understand the mechanisms of heart damage in COVID-19 infection by assessing a small group of patients with COVID-19 infection and troponin rise to look for clots within the heart arteries (using a special imaging catheter during a coronary angiogram procedure) and assessing for heart muscle damage using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) scanning. We believe this information will help us to understand the mechanisms of heart damage in these patients with a view to enabling doctors to provide targeted treatment to reduce damage according to the causes identified. \n\n\n [Study relying on COPI notice]
