  • Research summary

COVID-19 is an illness that affects people’s ability to breathe. Many people will be infected during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The only reliable test for infection is a nose or throat swab collected from a person who has symptoms of fever, cough or breathlessness. It is now understood that people may carry the virus for several days before they become unwell, which is likely to have been a major factor in the spread of COVID-19 around the globe.\n\nHealth care workers looking after patients with COVID-19 are at very high risk of being exposed to this infection. Whilst steps can be taken to prevent the infection, these are not always effective and the risk of being exposed continues when they leave work. There is also a risk of infected health care workers spreading the infection to colleagues and back to the patients they care for. \n\nUsing tests which provide evidence of past exposure to the infection, in this study we will assess how commonly health care workers encounter infection during the peak period of COVID-19 in the UK. We will also look at and how often exposure to infection results in symptoms. Investigating the rate of infection in high-risk front-line health care workers may offer new insights and valuable information into the spread of COVID-19 in the general population and how to better combat the pandemic.\n
