  • Research summary

The global community is experiencing an unprecedented pandemic of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Its widespread\nnature and the possibility of developing severe disease has led to critical challenges to healthcare systems\nworldwide. New technologies could play a pivotal role in facing these challenges.\nAs such, the current study intends to investigate the use of an existing respiratory monitoring device, the “Albus Home”\ndevice, as a COVID-19 symptom monitoring system. The Albus Home device is a non-contact device that is placed on\nthe bedside, which works totally passively, designed for maximum convenience at home. We hypothesise that\nmonitoring respiratory symptoms in those who are at high risk of COVID-19 as well as their close contacts could be\nvaluable in better understanding its diagnosis and prognosis.\nThe study aims to discover new ways to monitor the longitudinal effects of COVID-19 on the body to discover whether\npatterns of symptoms could be used to early predict the severity or the onset of disease. We also intend to provide a\ntool by which we can better understand the natural history of COVID-19 infections and also for use in other trials to\nreview the effectiveness of new treatments.\nThis study will focus on recruiting those at greater risk or exposure, in particular health and care workers, residents in\ncare homes, and those with underlying health conditions. If the technology can be urgently tested in the current\noutbreak, it may be useful for use during the latter parts of the current outbreak, as well as in future outbreaks, and\nprovide key insights to help in the global response to this pandemic.
