  • Research summary

On 11th March the World Health Organisation (WHO) designated novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a global pandemic. At that time, the most significantly affected countries included China, Republic of Korea, Iran, and Italy. Globally there were 118,319 confirmed cases and 4,292 deaths [1]. On 27th March, just over two weeks later, the WHO reported 509,164 confirmed cases and 23,335 deaths [2]. Published data from China show that increasing age may be the most significant risk factor for death from COVID-19, with other significant risk factors identified including male sex, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic lung disease [3-5]. Europe is now the most affected WHO region, with the increase of cases and deaths showing no sign of slowing. The limited published data available so far suggests risk factors for mortality from COVID-19 in Europe are similar to those in China [6, 7]. While not yet as heavily affected as other European countries such as Italy, Spain, and France, the pandemic is gathering momentum in the UK; Northwick Park Hospital has seen the highest numbers of UK cases admitted to its hospital.\nWe would like to conduct a cohort study to identify clinical factors among all admitted patients testing positive for COVID-19 to identify predictors of death and of need for ventilation. We will use the information from this feasibility study to conduct a larger study in the future. \n [Study relying on COPI notice]
