Research summary
The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented disruption to the fabric of society, our health service and economy. Social distancing measures are one of the central tenets of the global response to this pandemic. These measures, are, however, also highly likely to affect both our psychological and physical well-being. The aim of our research is to (i) understand the magnitude and nature of the psychological harm inflicted by the pandemic; (ii) examine the potential for it to translate into physical harm; and (iii) provide evidence to inform how these harms may be mitigated.\n\nTo do this we will be recruiting participants through social and mainstream media to complete three short (10 minute) online surveys: completed when participants sign-up and then again in 12 weeks time, and then again when any significant changes to social distancing restrictions are made. We are also asking participants to take two small hair samples (at the baseline and 12 weeks time points) to enable us to measure the stress biomarker cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone involved in the stress response and is known to effect other physiological systems including the immune system.
