Research summary
People with intellectual disability (ID) and/or autism have specific care and support needs that are different than the general population (Hanlon et al. 2018). Many of the measures introduced to manage the Coronavirus pandemic, such as the change in routine and behaviour, are very likely to have an impact on people with ID and/or autism and their families and carers that are different to the impact on the general population. \n\nThe aim of the study is to explore the individual lived experiences of families and carers for people with autism and/or intellectual disability, and the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. The research Team will be working with NHS Trust clinical services and partner organisations to identify possible participants to be interviewed for the study. The study participant cohort will include two distinct groups: family and carers of children and young people with intellectual disability and/or autism and family and carers of adults with intellectual disability with or without autism.\n\nInterviews will be conducted either over the phone or through video conferencing at this time of COVID-19 contact restriction. All the interviews will be transcribed. All interviewers are fully trained and experienced in qualitative data gathering and analysis. University of Chester senior academics have been involved from the outset. The interviewer will be fully supported/ supervised by Professor Steven Jones(University of Chester) and Dr Sujeet Jaydeokar . The interviews will be recorded using telephone or secure video conferencing facilities approved by Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.\n
