  • Data collection arrangements

Data entered into the database will be derived from clinical therapy sessions and completed client and therapist questionnaires. Data held, and the secure management, monitoring and governance of the database will be the responsibility of the York St John Counselling Research Clinic and its Steering Group. Therapy sessions will be audio-recorded in digital format and stored on securely held hard drives in a locked room adjacent to the psychology and counselling laboratory. Questionnaires will be both online (supported by NHS recognised CORENet security measures) and in hard-copy format. Both the online and hard-copy data is in an anonymised format, using unique client identifiers to secure clients' identities.

  • Research programme

The York St John Counselling Research Clinic will investigate therapy interventions for victims of domestic violence. The clinic director and lead researchers have active profiles within their lead Professional Associations, are experienced researchers and keen to extend the currently limited UK research-base on effective mental health and wellbeing interventions for victims of domestic violence. Clients can give informed consent to have information gathered during their therapy sessions at the clinic (comprising audio-recorded counselling sessions and questionnaires completed across the period of therapy) included in the clinic’s research database. The clinic will advertise its services through GP and other NHS clinic settings, as well as in public contexts such as lending libraries, community –focused and social settings. Outcomes from research undertaken at the clinic will be disseminated through appropriate local, regional and national publications and settings, as well as through professional journals, professional body magazines and GP practices. Public and service user perspectives will inform the on-going work and governance of the clinic (both clinical and research activity) and will be represented in the clinic’s steering group. The group is responsible for the operational governance and strategic development of the clinic.
