Research summary
The study aim is to assess the long term outcomes of frailty in older patients admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of COVID -19. The original COPE study assessed short term outcomes and showed that frailty was associated with poorer outcomes. The study results were published in the Lancet Public Health in June 2020. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19) was identified in 2019 as a new strain of pneumonia inducing virus.(5%).
Data on 1565 people with COVID-19 were collected, this study will reassess their frailty status, respiratory status and mental health at 6 and 12 months after their admission to hospital with COVID-19.
Methods: 11 hospitals in the UK who participated in the first COPE study will be asked to follow up participants who are still alive at 6 and 12 months from diagnosis. Over the telephone, they will be assessed for frailty, respiratory function and their mental health status.REC name
