  • Research summary

Conversion disorder (CD) or functional neurological disorder is a condition that can present itself in a variety of ways, for example medically unexplained movement problems. It affects in the region of 764,000 people in the UK per year and leads to long-term distress, disability and utilization of health care services. The origin of the disorder is unknown and current treatment options are limited.
We will explore the feasibility of recruiting a cohort of patients who are able and willing to complete questionnaires, give a blood and a hair sample and undergo psycho-diagnostic assessment, and of assessing the role of stress-related systemic low-grade inflammation in the development of motor symptoms associated with the disorder.
All aspects of the feasibility and acceptability to patients of the study and its processes will be examined and the study results will inform the development of a future full trial of anti-inflammatory drugs (AID) as treatment option.
