Research summary
The early diagnosis of dementia is a topic that has been given increased attention in recent years in research and by the government. It is well recognised that an early diagnosis of dementia can be advantageous in helping people and their families understand what is happening and plan for the future. However, most of the benefits of an early diagnosis rely on people having access to ongoing support from services.
This study is interested in finding out how people and their families make sense of an early diagnosis and what they preceive to be the benefits of this. Furthermore the study is interested to know what relational support is helpful from services to enable them to cope with the changes and to live well with dementia. As this study is taking place as part fulfillment of the researcher’s Masters in Family therapy, there is also an interest in finding out whether family sessions if they had been available would have been helfpul to people with dementia and their family.
This study takes place within a new dementia service focused on early diagnosis support and it is anticpated that the findings obtained from the study will help inform future developments within this service.
