  • Research summary

The UK Bowel Cancer Screening Programme was implemented to reduce the risk of deaths from bowel cancer by identifying them early when treatment is more effective. Regular bowel screening has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from bowel cancer by 15%. Polyps may be seen during colonoscopy and are usually removed as they could grow and cause problems later. Sometimes polyps develop into cancer. Polyps and cancer can occur anywhere in the bowel and they are usually detected at colonoscopy but there is a small percentage of people who develop cancers despite having colonoscopies as a part of the screening programme. These cancers are usually in the right side of the upper large bowel. There is some evidence to suggest that these cancers could be caused by a certain type of flat polyp called a serrated polyp. Small studies have suggested that these polyps may have a faster rate of growth into cancer than the usual polyps (adenomas). These serrated polyps are typically flat and quite difficult to detect.
This study investigates whether spraying this dye throughout the upper large bowel helps the doctor to detect more serrated polyps. The dye (called Indigo Carmine) that is used is safe and based on a food colouring agent that is already used in bowel camera procedures in standard practice. By using this dye, your colonoscopy procedure may take approximately 6 minutes longer than the normal colonoscopy test. We hope to find out through this study if this method works in practice and improves the detection and removal of more of serrated polyps within the screening programme.
