  • Research summary

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common types of birth defect and affects up to 8 in every 1,000 babies born in the UK. Major CHD is defined as a cardiac lesion that requires surgery or significant cardiac intervention during the 1st year of life.

CHD is more common in twins than singletons but still, the long term prognosis of CHD in twins and whether this is different from singleton babies is unknown.

The aim of this study is to investigate whether the risk of death or significant sequela in congenital heart defects, detected before birth, in twins differs from that in singletons with similar heart defect and assess whether being a twin influences the outcome of any serious heart intervention.
