  • Research summary

Leadership skills and qualities are a requirement for nurses at the point of qualifying. However, there is a lack of evidence which defines clearly what leadership skills, behaviours and knowledge are required in newly qualified nurses. Furthermore, leadership within nurse education has not been conceptualised; this gap in knowledge requires addressing if future nurse education is to provide effective programmes for student nurses. Therefore, conceptualising leadership from the perspective of students, academics and senior nurses who manage newly qualified nurses, will provide a framework from all key stakeholders and inform future education and policy in preparing an effective nursing workforce with confirmed leadership expectations. A qualitative narrative inquiry method to explore the perceptions and experiences of the participants will be applied. Researcher generated photographic images of nature as symbols of leadership will be included to provide a stimulus for definition, reflection, storytelling and experience of leadership. Focus groups and semi structured interviews will be used to gather data from student nurses in Cardiff University, academics in Cardiff University and senior nurses. Purposive sampling will recruit 5 to 8 participants from each group who have the required status, knowledge and experience for the study aims.
