Research summary
Pelvic exenteration (PE) is a major radical operation with significant morbidity and it represents the last curative
option in recurrent gynecologic cancers previously treated with radiotherapy. In selected patients in whom this surgical
procedure is performed with curative intent, overall survival ranges from 20% to 73% at 5 years. In the clinical practice,
33-53% of women still recur with local or distant metastasis few months after the PE. Moreover, PE is affected by
significant peri-operative morbidity, important psychological impact and high hospitalization costs: for all these
reasons each single patient should be selected for this procedure with an extreme accuracy.
The primary objective of this retrospective cohort study is to collect a large database of patients who underwent PE
performed by skilled surgeons in highly specialized gynecologic oncology centers, which allows identifying robust
factors affecting peri-operative complications and survival.REC name
