  • Research summary

    Why we are doing this:
Thousands of patients with chest injuries, such as broken ribs, attend hospital every year. Therapists (physiotherapists, occupational therapists and others) play an important role in the patients' care, but don’t always know what skills / knowledge are important to achieve the best possible care. A competency checklist is a method used by a clinician to assess their own skills and knowledge, which in turn ensures safety and quality of care.

    What we hope to discover:
What should be included in the competency checklist, and once developed, whether therapists find it useful. The checklist will be used by therapists managing adult with blunt chest injuries.

Who will take part in this work:
Adult patients who had lived experience of a blunt chest injury, therapists caring for these patients, and stakeholders (other health workers who are involved in the care of these patients)

    What is involved?
To understand what should be included in the checklist, one of our phases of work will include holding online focus groups meetings with patients, therapists and other professionals to collect information on they think are important aspects of the care.

Where will this work be done?
The patients will be asked to participate in the focus group meetings, if they are a patient in Morriston Hospital, Swansea.
