Research summary
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary programme with an exercise and educational component. It is designed for people with chronic respiratory disease and is individually tailored to optimising patients independence. A significant body of evidence supports the benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation, particularly in the management of people with chronic pulmonary rehabilitation.
The essential components of a high-quality pulmonary rehabilitation programme have been outlined within the British Thoracic Society Standards for Pulmonary Rehabilitation in adults. These guidelines suggest a pulmonary rehabilitation programme with duration of at least 6 weeks, which includes twice weekly supervised sessions.
This study will aim to compare patient outcomes for two different delivery methods of pulmonary rehabilitation. The first delivery method will be inline with current guidelines offering twice weekly sessions for 6 weeks, the second will include one weekly supervised session and one home-based session for 6 weeks. Therefore, the overall exercise volume (twice per week for 6 weeks) will be the same for both groups. Both groups will also receive the six 1-hour education sessions as per the guidelines. Patients completing one-weekly session at home will be provided with the equipment in order to complete their exercise programme.
A range of outcome measures will be used for the study to compare the two groups. These will include Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire, CAT, 6-Minute Walk Test, and Hospital Anxiety Depression questionnaire.
Whilst this study does challenges current guidelines, it will also give an insight into patient exercise compliance at home. This is a particularly important issue in the long-term management of patients with chronic respiratory patients.
