Research summary
This study will look at two different machines that measure the amount of oxygen carried by the blood in the brain, using light absorption. We use these machines routinely to monitor children during cardiac surgery and try and protect them from neurological complications. We wish to see how a newer device (FORE-SIGHT) correlates with the more established device (INVOS), so that if we change our routine monitor we can adjust our protocols appropriately. We plan to use both monitors simultaneously on children and infants during cardiac surgery and collect data from both and clinical data to evaluate the ability of the monitors to detect significant instability in the patients condition should this occur.
