Research summary
Fresnel prisms have become widely accepted in the non-invasive management of double vision and are routinely used in Orthoptic practice. Fresnel prisms represent a significant portion of the Orthoptic department expenditure and their use requires additional clinical time and resources. Evidence of their benefit is paramount, especially at this time of fiscal austerity. Quality of life measurements are increasingly used to evaluate treatment effectiveness and can be used to influence policy. The Adult Strabismus Quality of Life (AS-20) questionnaire is one such tool. This is a 20 item quality of life questionnaire, used to assess both psychosocial and functional issues, developed for adults with squint. This study aims to quantify the impact of Fresnel prism treatment for double vision, from the patient’s perspective using a validated questionnaire.
Adult patients who require a Fresnel prism to correct their binocular double vision and who have never used prisms before will be eligible to take part in the study. A cohort of 30 Patients will be recruited on a voluntary basis from those attending the Orthoptic clinic at Southampton General Hospital Eye Unit, providing they satisfy the inclusion criteria. It is envisaged that data will be collected by the Principle Investigator over a period of approximately 3 months. Recruited patients will be required to complete the quality of life questionnaire (AS 20 questionnaire) prior to the use of a Fresnel prism and again 4-8 weeks later at the follow up appointment. For the purposes of this study, a extra set of questions will be asked in addition to the 20 validated questions pre and post Fresnel fitting. The use of the AS-20 questionnaire and additional questions may provide further insight into the use of Fresnel prism treatment to aid double vision and on everyday functioning.REC name
