Research summary
The aim of this study is to test whether a physical activity programme consisting of group education session on lifestyle and behaviour change, daily use of pedometer and simple strengthening exercises can increase number of steps, decrease sedentary time, improve health and wellbeing, and reduce the risk of heart disease among those with rheumatoid arthritis within the first five years of diagnosis. Ninety people with Rheumatoid Arthritis who fulfil the inclusion criteria will be randomly allocated to Group 1 (Intervention group) who will receive a six month programme consisting of education sessions, pedometer to use it during daily activity and education material or Group 2 (comparison group) who will receive one education session and education material about physical activity and healthy diet. Outcome measures will be taken at baseline, 3, 6 (after the intervention) and 12 months later.
