Research summary
This study will explore the views and experiences of those delivering and taking part in community based brief interventions for self harm (SH).
SH is common, often repeated and is the most predictive risk factor for death by suicide. It has become a growing problem over the last 40 years and rates of incidence within Northern Ireland are the highest within the United Kingdom. Statistics show an even gender balance of SH presentations to Emergency Departments, yet, there is a lack of research based evidence focusing on gender specific interventions, especially those aimed at males.
This study will focus on individuals who have undertaken a brief intervention - the Self-Harm Intervention Programme (SHIP). SHIP offer psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy via trained counsellors and also offer an educational service to family members/carers who want more information about how to help someone who SH.
The study consists of three distinct, independent phases and data will be collected by conducting individual semi-structured interviews lasting approximately one hour. Phase 1 aims to understand the SHIP therapies delivered by counsellors and their experience of delivering these, phase 2 the experience of males and females who have completed SHIP, both post-intervention (up to one month post-intervention) and again at three months post-intervention, phase 3 to understand the experience of family members/carers who have used SHIP services. All phases are independent; completion of one phase doesn't depend upon completion of the previous phase.
For Phase 1, recruitment will take place via engagement from the SHIP Programme Manager, the researcher emailing all participants and meeting them face-to-face to gain consent. Recruitment for Phases 2&3 will be upon completion of SHIP and SHIP staff will act as gatekeepers requesting consent to pass contact details to the researcher so they can be contacted to request participation in the study.
