Research summary
The aim of this study is to establish variables influencing communication about healthy lives for the prevention and management of obesity from both the nurse and patient perspectives. The study objectives are
•To investigate the attitudes of nurses towards patients with overweight/obesity.
•To examine whether there are differences in the attitudes of registered and unregistered nursing staff towards patients with overweight/obesity.
•To assess whether nurses perceive that their own BMI impacts on the clinical encounter.
•To investigate whether these attitudes impact on the communication which occurs between the nurse and patient.
•To observe who are the active participants in the promotion of healthy lives within the clinical encounter.
•To determine whether patients with overweight/obesity report any sense of stigmatisation during clinical encounters.The study will consist of three phases, firstly an online survey, secondly observations in the clinical environment and thirdly semi-structured interviews with patients.
