Research summary
This research project aims to explore the ways in which families affected by dementia adapt to and manage changes in communication. There will be three core components to the study: firstly, interviews with people with dementia and individual family members will be carried out to understand their experiences of living with communication changes together. Secondly, everyday conversations between the person with dementia and their family members will be recorded to examine how members of the family manage conversational difficulties during their interactions. Data collated from the primary stage will inform the second component of the project, leading to the development and evaluation of evidence-informed practice guidance, that will influence the clinical work of Speech and Language Therapists who support families affected by dementia. Additionally, findings from this project will also be gathered into an accessible publication for people with dementia and their families, and may offer coping strategies and techniques, that may serve to facilitate connection between people with dementia and their family members, and ultimately, enhance quality of life and wellbeing.
