Research summary
The prevalence of people living with HIV is higher in Bristol than the national average and has been increasing since 2011. There is also a disproportionate number of people of African and Caribbean Heritage in Bristol who unaware they are HIV positive and only diagnosed once their infection is advanced, increasing the risk of passing on the virus to others through unprotected sex. In addition, problems have been identified in accessing HIV and sexual health services in this part of the community.
Common Ambition Bristol (CAB) aims to tackle these issues, by African and Caribbean members of the public working in equal partnership with sexual health care staff to co-produce sexual health services and interventions that increase HIV testing and reduce HIV stigma in Bristol. The interventions will be rolled out in two distinct phases through 2022 and 2023. The impact of these interventions will be assessed quantitatively and qualitatively. The component of the project covered in this application relates to quantitative analysis of electronic patient record and postal tesking kit data from sexual health clinics, and the administration and analysis of a voluntary survey of sexual health clinic attendees.
