  • Research summary

This is an observational study that aims to investigate how frailty in patients affects outcome after an operations. It has been shown that being increasingly frail puts patients at increased risk of complications during the operative period. In this study we will carry out 3 simples tests in patients attending the pre-asssesment clinic at the western general hospital. 2 of these tests are carried out routinely in the pre-assessment clinic and we will perform one additional test. These tests are:

    Standard tests:
    Haemoglobin level
American Society of Anaesthesiology (ASA) score

    Additional test:
    Timed-up-and-go test

From the results of these tests a combined score will be derived to indicate how frail a patient is. They will be followed up after their operation to look at their outcome - this will include where they go after leaving hospital, serious complications, morbidity and mortality.
