Data collection arrangements
Previous:
The tissue bank collects genito-urinary tissue. The collection includes fresh frozen and formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue (FFPE) of prostate, testis, penile, kidney and bladder. The tissue collected will be anonymised using specific ORTB ID codes breaking the link with patient identification details. Patient identifiable data will be kept in a secure database which is encrypted and has access limited to authorised staff. The sample will be stored in a secure access area in Charterhouse square.
Patients will be identified by the clinical care team and they will inform ORTB staff. Patients will be approached either by the clinical care team or ORTB staff for consent. Patients will be given the consent form with the information sheet to read through and will be encouraged to ask questions. If the patient agrees for tissue donation then consent will be obtained.Modification 2: The collection includes body fluids such as blood, blood derivatives, urine and saliva in addition to fresh frozen and FFPE tissue.
The ORTB database is under the BCC IT server and is protected through a firewall with access limited only to authorised staff. It is also password protected.
Provided the ORTB application for CAG is successful, accessing patient identifiable data (PID) for identifying potential patients through ORTB group will take place. If not ORTB will adhere to the process as carried out currently, collaborating with clinical care team.Potential patients will be identified through the Barts Health NHS trust electronic patient record (EPR) database and the care record service (CRS) through one of the ORTB staff members who has been authorised and trained in using the trust database. These patients will be forwarded to the ORTB delegated staff for consent. Only patient identifiable data of consented patients will be stored in ORTB secure database.
Research programme
Previous: We hope that from this prospectively stored tissue it will be possible to identify new markers which have clinical application. In addition, will give us a greater understanding of the mechanism of carcinogenesis and potentially give prognostic information and identify new treatments. A wide range of well established ethically approved molecular techniques will be performed on this tissue, which will be study dependent. The tissue bank is funded by Orchid, a charity funding male cancer research and set up by a member of the public, Mr C Osborne, a testis cancer survivor. Prof Berney is responsible to them and gives yearly reports to them on the tissue bank's progress. The Trustees of Orchid oversee and approve of our research programme. The charity organises regular events to the public and more information is available on the Orchid website. Other public information concerning the Orchid tissue bank can be found at https://orchid-cancer.org.uk/
