Research summary
During the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic clinical research has focussed on treatment options to optimise survival of patients who have COVID-19 in the acute care hospital environment.
This study explores the longer-term physical, social, emotional and cognitive consequences of hospitalisation for these patients and the healthcare service, during the post hospital recovery period (up to one year). It will also examine the long-term impact of treatment pathways to understand the entire illness pathway for various different groups of patients.
As well as the direct effects of the viral infection, COVID-19 is associated with significant immune changes related to both the infection and the therapies/interventions used for treatments. Blood samples will be obtained during the post hospital recovery period to allow us to measure a wide range of inflammatory and immune biomarkers and see how they change over time. In-depth clinical and biomarker characterisation of these patients will hopefully enable us to stratify patients into different groups who are more likely respond to different types of treatment.REC name
