Research summary
Brain disorders in children such as dystonia that affect movement and cause significant problems with self-care and independence later in life. Some of these difficulties persist (often in lesser degree) following surgical intervention such as deep brain stimulation (DBS). physical interventions including OT offer potential to improve outcome in children with hyperkinetic movement disorders when offered as an adjunct to DBS.
This research will study children with hyperkinetic movement disorders (HMD) that are under the care of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust.
Hyperkinetic simply means excessive unwanted movement and includes different kinds of involuntary movements including dystonia, chorea and athetosis (both also known as dyskinesias), myoclonus and tremor.
The intervention will be focused on difficulties performing functional activities and it will be delivered to children with family involvement in their own homes.
This initial stage will help refine the intervention ahead of stage 2 which will be a pilot randomised control trial (RCT).
