Research summary
At the moment, there are problems in the care given to pregnant women that are worrying because they can lead to a lot of harm and even death of the mother and baby. You might have seen something about this in documentaries on the TV or in the news. One of the things that is thought to be part of the problem is hospitals not being able to learn from the things that go wrong.
This project aims to help in making it easier to learn from the things that go wrong so that things can get better. Firstly, we will speak to staff who give care to pregnant women and understand how they tell people what went wrong and how it could be fixed. We will also watch them give care so that we can know how this happens in the middle of a busy shift. We will look at how they write this all down and what happens to this information.
Then we will work with a group of people with knowledge on these things, like midwives and doctors to work together to design a support guide that will give advice on how to learn from when things go wrong. We will then ask a separate group of people who have not taken part in the design of the guide questions about if they think it will be easy to use and useful in helping maternity services learn from when things don’t go right.REC name
