Research summary
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have a significant negative impact on health outcomes for adults, and those under the care of Secondary Mental Health Care have a higher level of ACEs than the general population. Trauma Informed Pratice is often identified as the best way to support those with high levels of ACEs, but it can only be implemented if staff have an understanding of the ACEs that service users have experienced. Screening measures for ACEs can take the form of set interview questions or self-complete questionnaires. The research aims to collect information on how staff in Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) feel about using measures that screen for ACEs.
I aim to recruit staff of all professions within CMHTs in Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation Trust. I will be using an online anonymous questionnaire to collect data. The questionnaire will be sent to participants via admin staff within the NHS trust, along with the information sheet with further detail on the study. The questionnaire will collect minimal demographic information; age (within age brackets), profession, years of experience working in mental health and gender identity. The questionnaire will collect data on whether staff have attended trainining on ACEs or Trauma Informed Practice, and whether this training has impacted on their practice. I will also aim to collect data on their self-reported current knowlwedge of ACEs and how Trauma Informed their practice is. Data will be collected on their views towards using a screening tool for Adverse Childhood Experiences and how confident they would feel using it
I aim to identify CMHT staffs current views on using ACEs screening measures in their daily practice and whether there are any factors which increase CMHT staffs likelihood of being in favour of using screening measures in their daily practice.
