  • Research summary

This study will evaluate participants' experiences of 'The Decider', a 12 week skills group based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for people with difficulty managing their emotions. To date, limited research has explored clients' experiences of DBT groups. DBT is a type of talking therapy which has traditionally consisted of individual sessions, a skills group and telephone contact, however more recent research has begun to look at the effectiveness of the group element of DBT as a standalone treatment with a focus on outcome measures. 'The Decider' is substantially shorter than traditional DBT skills groups which typically run for 12 months and is therefore less time/resource intensive, it also includes a CBT element. Results from this study could have implications for service delivery of this type of group in a context where resources are often limited. Research suggests that DBT skills groups have low attrition rates and this study aims to include participants who did not complete 'The Decider' as well as those who did. Participants will take part in a one-off telephone interview using a semi-structured format. All participants will be recruited from Community Mental Health and Recovery Teams (CMHART) within Cumbria Partnership Foundation Trust, and the information obtained during this study will be used to influence future Decider skills groups.
