Research summary
The study will investigate clients' experiences of a specific intervention during a course of compassion-focused therapy. The research will focus on clients with depression in a primary care NHS setting.
The intervention will be part of routine clinical practice and will involve clients’ practicing a breathing technique called soothing-rhythm breathing (SRB), which aims to activate the body’s soothing system help people learn to be more caring or compassionate towards themselves. Clients will also practice the SRB exercise at home for 1 week.
The aim of the study is to learn from people receiving the intervention, people will be interviewed and asked questions.
We aim to interview 8-10 people for up to one hour. The interviews will be transcribed and analysed in order to understand their experiences. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) will be used for the analysis. IPA is a well-established qualitative research method for exploring and understanding individual experience and meaning-making.
What we learn from the study will be used to improve therapy and how we can help people with depression using compassion.
