Research summary
An artificial eye (AE) is worn by patients whose eye has been removed due to eye cancer or trauma, or if there is a congenital defect. The current manufacturing process is a century old artisan one, where an artificial eye is made by hand, taking several weeks. Furthermore, not all the anatomical details of a normal eye can be reproduced on the prosthetic.\n\nThis project seeks to change the rehabilitation of these patients using modern technology. First, optical coherence tomography (OCT, a non-invasive scan taking 2.4 seconds) captures the anatomy of the normal eye and a colour calibrated photograph is taken on the same machine. This information will then be converted by computer graphics into a file which can be sent to a 3-dimensional printer, which can manufacture medical grade ocular prosthetics in less than 2 hours. \n\nAt Moorfields Eye Hospital, this technology has been developed to make the first 3D printed artificial eye prototypes. For this project, we will carry out a randomised clinical trial comparing the efficacy, safety and acceptability of the 3D printed ocular prosthetic versus the handmade analogue one. As offshoots, we will also develop the imaging technology of the OCT machine to image the normal fellow eye of participants to study variability in colour and anatomy; to image tumours of the anterior of the eye; and to carry out a proof-of-concept study that 3D printed prosthetics can be safely worn with congenital malformations of the eye.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
