  • Research summary

Background: Finding cost and time effective ways to personalise care is imperative to supporting people with dementia and their careers to reduce premature breakdown of care provided by the family.
Aim of study: To assess the feasibility of using data from smart sensors and devices to develop an intelligent digital platform (CLEAR-AI) to more effectively support people living with dementia.
Study design: Proof of Concept feasibility study.
Participants: 20 individuals living with dementia and their carers (if applicable) identified from people referred to the NHSCT Dementia Home Support Team.
    Objectives
    1. To obtain data from people with dementia and their carers on their daily patterns of stress using smart sensors and devices
    2. To obtain qualitative information from people with dementia and their carers on their daily routines, activities, ambient factors or life-events to overlay on the quantitative sensor data
    3. To model the data to identify triggers stress and distress for both the person with dementia and their carer, and interventions which may prevent or mitigate them
    4. To use this data to develop a personalised intelligent digital platform (CLEAR-AI) which integrates CLEAR Dementia Care© (CLEAR) alongside interactivity and learning derived from collected individual’s sensor data
    5. To learn continuously from the person with dementia and their carers, testing new data against the model as the participants undertake various interventions (digital and non-digital), updating it as appropriate, thus responding to the individual’s changing needs.
Outcome: If successful CLEAR-AI has the agility to reduce the impact of agitation on the individual and their carer as the dementia progresses and supporting the Service User to be independent for longer.
