Research summary
Our study proposes to evaluate the efficacy of 6 clinically available, advanced MRI sequences in differentiating between different types of enhancing brain lesion. All the sequences proposed are currently in use in this University MRI department in selected brain tumour groups with the exception of Intravoxel Incoherent Motion which is currently being used in breast MRI examinations.
These techniques produce images revealing how various parts of the brain are working, i.e. they are ‘physiological’ techniques. From them we measure differences in cellularity, blood flow and blood vessel permeability.
We hypothesise that one or more of the advanced MR sequences could be used to improve the discrimination of new contrast-enhancing lesions in the brain. This would lead to better patient management and ultimately a better quality of life for brain patients.
To the author’s knowledge, no detailed comparison of the efficacy of the techniques has been formally conducted with individual neurooncology sites around the UK using different combinations of the techniques listed above.
