  • Research summary

The aim of this small scale qualitative study is to interview 10 people aged over 75 years of age and ask them about their priorities and preferences for care and services if they were in the last year of life. Understanding what the priorities are for older people in the last year of life is essential if future services are to be developed which are responsive to their wants and needs. Over 70% of all deaths in England are in those aged > 75 years of age, yet the views of older people are often under represented in national studies.

A qualitative method was chosen to explore the issue in depth and sensitively.
St Mary's GP practice in Ely who are a member of the Isle Of Ely Local Commissioning Group have agreed to support the study. Recruitment will take place from their practice list. The practice will approach people aged over 75 years of age who are living at home and have the capacity to consent to the study. They will send an information pack with the study details to potential participants. Those who are interested in participating will be asked to return a reply slip with their contact details so the researcher can get in touch with them. A time will then be allocated to meet with them at their convenience either at home or at the local community hospital. At this meeting any further questions can be answered before consent for the study will be obtained. An audio recording will be taken of the interview to ensure accurate data collection and for quality control. The interview should take around 30 to 60 minutes and will be semi structured with open ended questions.
