Data collection arrangements
Blood cells change their shape and size (morphology) in diseases where there is inflammation in the body. The CICERO database will collect data on blood cell morphology, from routine tests done on blood samples. CICERO will also collect clinical information from patients with medical conditions related to inflammation, such as infection, cancer, autoimmune disorders and unhealthy ageing e.g. heart disease and dementia. CICERO will store information on age, ethnicity, diagnosis and treatment, outpatient and hospital attendance and/or admission, test results and clinical outcomes e.g. remission in patients with cancer. Clinical information is from routine electronic systems held at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT). CICERO will be securely held by ICHNT. Sample and clinical information will be linked using encrypted codes and no identifiable information will be held by CICERO.
Research programme
CICERO will help researchers better understand conditions that are linked to inflammation. By studying the shape and size of white blood cells, we hope to make new tests to diagnose these conditions much more quickly and easily. Earlier and more accurate diagnose could have a huge impact for many conditions, such as cancer. We also hope to make new tools to help doctors make decisions about treatment, such as which is the best medicine to choose, when to start and when to stop it. CICERO will support work by researchers in clinical medicine, health informatics and immunology.
