Research summary
At Moorfields Eye Hospital (Moorfields), children and young people (CYP) take part in eye and vision research to enable the development of safe, effective and acceptable treatments and care. CYP’s research experiences should be high quality and child and family-centred. Relatively little is known about how we can achieve this; this project is a crucial step to gain an understanding and directing improvements.
Families who have taken part in eye and vision research at Moorfields and research staff will be invited to join. The research methods ‘Experience-based Co-design’ (EBCD) have been chosen to enable CYP, parents/guardians and staff to share their views about what is important to their research experiences, then work together to design ways to improve.
The project is divided into three Phases. Three EBCD stages make up Phase 1; participants can join all or any of the following:
Stage 1 - observations of a variety of CYPs' research visits.
Stage 2 - filmed interviews with families (CYP & parents/guardians) and staff to explore their experiences of eye and vision research. Two meetings will follow, to agree improvement priorities.
Stage 3 - based on the priorities for improvement agreed in Stage 2, families and staff will work together to design (‘co-design’) improvement ideas or solutions (‘interventions’).Phase 2 is an evaluation of the project methods and experiences; four surveys for participants to complete are built into the EBCD framework.
In Phase 3, stakeholders, including CYP, parents/guardians and health professionals with relevant expertise, will assess how feasible the ‘co-designed intervention(s)’ are, and make recommendations for a future evaluation study.
Advisory groups, including CYP, have helped shape the design of this National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) funded project. The findings will contribute to improving CYP’s vision-related health by improving the way we research it.
