  • Research summary

Hysterectomy surgery is the most common gynecological surgery performed in the UK with around 60,000 being performed each year. It’s estimated that approximately 32% of patients undergoing the procedure will experience a condition known as chronic post-operative pain (CPOP) in which pain following the surgery continues for many months or years with no obvious cause. The primary aim of this research is to test how effective as self-help mindfulness-based intervention is in reducing the development of CPOP likelihood of women undergoing elective hysterectomy surgery. Women over the age of 18, without current diagnoses of depression, anxiety or other psychological conditions, who are undergoing hysterectomy surgery due to benign (non-cancerous) reasons can take part. The intervention takes place online meaning that all materials and questionnaires can be downloaded or completed online and in the participants online. The intervention comprises of several mindfulness-based exercises which have been tailored to individuals undergoing hysterectomy surgery, each exercise takes between 10 and 25 minutes to complete and we would ask that participants practice one exercise each day for the two-weeks before their surgery and during the eight-week recovery period. Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires assessing several variables including pain, symptoms of anxiety and depression, coping strategies and pain-related disability at 2 weeks pre-surgery, 24 hours pre-surgery, 2 weeks post-surgery, 12 weeks post-surgery (1st follow up 1) and 24 weeks post-surgery (2nd follow up).
